Capturing the essence of the pink salt of Punjab, from mines deep in the Himalayan land where the brisk scent of earth tells a tale of the bravery and might of miners who extract the crystals that gleam with hues of rose. Navigating through narrow mountain tunnels and passages that are often dark and damp, the miners brace forward into the caves eventually surrounded by a mystical and ethereal aura. As from the early 20th century onwards, the chypre accord has undoubtedly been regarded as the quintessential French perfume. Silphium (probably of the genus Ferula) was a plant that grew in the area of Cyrene, present day Libya, and was widely renowned as a spice, medicinal herb and perfume ingredient throughout the empires of the classical antiquity. It was praised by Greek philosophers and writers, as well as Roman emperors and cookbook authors. This is combination with its qualities as seasoning and medicine made Silphium the most valuable spice in the world, outshining both saffron and cinnamon. The demand for Silphium eventually became so overwhelming that it was harvested to extinction, and the taste and smell of the once greatest spice in the world was lost in time.

“During the years I have always found the beauty of Joshua Tree National Park and Twentynine Palms mind-blowing. The surreal features of succulents, all sculpted by storms, strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Bristle cactus plants that in contrast produce the most delicate and soft flowers. With many of them being psychoactive, the fragrance is also a testimonial to Laurel Canyon: the home of countless parties and LA rock musicians during the experimental era of the late 1960s and 1970s."

“The ‘peace and love sign’ was designed in the 1950s by Gerald Holtom and was along with the peace hand sign adopted by anti-war activists during the 1970s. The name 19-69 stands for just this: freedom, tolerance and counterculture. The scent Chinese Tobacco by 19-69 is also a reminiscence of a visit I made to a restaurant in Kuala Terengganu. It was late at night, the air was filled with wonderful aromas from the kitchen area, while a group of men was smoking and playing cards."

“I was in my teens when I first discovered Helmut Newton’s picture that made YSL’s ‘Le Smoking’ iconic. The genderlessness really made a big impression on me. With stark monochrome simplicity, Newton created a piece of iconography I still find myself inspired by. In the making of L'air Barbès I was strongly influenced by the androgyny in this picture. L'air Barbès by 19-69 is evocative of Paris’ different personas such as the concrete alleyways, la banlieue and of course, the area Barbès – Rochechouart. The fragrance is also a tribute to Paris, capitale de la mode.”

"In 19-69, a naked woman carrying a cross walked through the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. The performance act went under the name ‘Female Christ’. The social revolution and constant transgression of boundaries in the late 1960s meant that artists’ expressions took new directions. Some artists opposed of dominant values and behavior of society by using performance art: art that exists while in progress. However, this also means that significant voices and parts of art history from this time period risk to fade as they only exist as photographic or filmed records. The fragrance ‘Female Christ’ ensures that the memory of the art performance created and carried out by the artists Lene Adler Petersen and Bjørn Nørgaard at the Copenhagen Stock Exchange will live on forever."
