The 47th issue of†Harvard Design Magazine†is a renewed call to expand the architectural imagination to the interior. We go inside to consider the interiorís equipment and furnishings; its textures, colors, and atmospheres; its relationships with the body and the senses; and its potential to organize and influence human behavior, health, and everyday life.
ìWhat about the inside?î asked Mohsen Mostafavi in 2008, when he began his deanship at the Harvard GSD. In the midst of a global financial crisis, the first iPhone release, and intensifying Obama campaign chants of ìYes We Can,î a disoriented generation of students and practitioners were reassessing their discipline. No longer tasked with generating monumental megaprojects, architects had to find other, more modest ways to make an impact. It was an apt moment to look inwardóto reassess, and even redefine, the boundaries of the design disciplines.
Mohsenís question prompted this magazineís 29th issue, developed around the idea that the interior had been neglected, even trivialized, in practice and discourse. It was a call for experimental collaboration among the design disciplines, and for a reintegration of the realms in which they operate. A decade later, as Mohsenís deanship comes to a close, weíve gone inside once again by way of the rich history of the magazine itself.
Highlighting and reflecting on†Harvard Design Magazineís archive, and presenting innovative approaches to interior spaces past and present, ìInside Scoopî opens up the magazine as an interior itself, one housing vital objects of thought.

Escentric Molecules
"Molecule 05, cashmeran, is dry, radiant, warm and woody with an unexpected touch of pine resin”, says Geza Schoen. “That gave me the idea of creating a different kind of summer fragrance for Escentric 05. I wanted to evoke what it was like to be by the sea, but not by using the usual marine notes, which I find too artificial. ??Instead, I wanted to recreate the experience of being on an island in the Mediterranean, like the one where I have spent so many summers. What you notice as you walk up the path from the sea is how the heat changes plants and trees, they turn dry, resinous and aromatic.

ADVANCE OR REMAIN (BODY/DATA)
The second issue of IMPORTANT MAGAZINE focuses on the body shapeshifting from physical entity
to digital and back. In what realm do we belong (exist) and how do we navigate in the current landscape of the self vs. onscreen identities? Are we changing, are we forgetting, how are we human and what does that mean exactly? How does the body survive and renew itself while its data are being harvested and invested in societies submerged in surveillance? Is the notion of the human itself transmuting, and how do we distinguish ourselves from the algorithms and the codes that are now producing, modifying and filtering our interactions with one another?
Covers will be shipped out randomly.

In collaboration with Comme des Garçons Parfum, Adrian Joffe and Grace Coddington have united to create Grace’s first fragrance, Grace by Grace Coddington. Created by Comme des Garcons Parfum creative director, Christian Astuguevieille, Grace’s long time love of roses served as his inspiration for the scent, and Fabien Baron and his team worked closely with Grace to create the distinctive bottle. The bottle’s cap was clearly inspired by Grace’s not-so secret love of her cats, and the packaging showcases some of her original and unique drawings.
Top notes: A citrus freshness of bergamot oil, an aromatic hint of mint and basil leaves, spicy notes of cardamom and pink peppercorns.
Heart notes: Moroccan rose absolute, freesia and peach blossom.

Chanel
This is the long-awaited third edition of Justine Picardie's acclaimed illustrated biography of Coco Chanel (1883–1971), one of the twentieth century’s most captivating personalities and a defining figure in fashion history. Whoever attempts to understand Chanel’s life is confronted by countless myths, half-truths and rumors. In this book Picardie discovers the woman behind the legend, and tells Chanel’s story with a flair and clarity of which Coco herself would approve. Chanel – Her Life explores every facet of Chanel’s universe: her fascinating private life as well as the famous icons of her fashion empire—the tweed jacket, the little black dress, N° 5 perfume, the pearls, the camellia …
The result is a comprehensive biography that reveals Chanel’s style to be the outcome of rigorous elegance, resolute self-belief and a determinedly unconventional stance. Picardie was granted access to Chanel’s archives and is the first author to have examined previously undiscovered private archives in the United Kingdom and France; and this unique knowledge underpins Chanel – Her Life. The book, designed and with drawings by Karl Lagerfeld, and with a new foreword by Picardie celebrating Lagerfeld’s extraordinary time at the House of Chanel, is the definitive biography of the tantalizingly elusive Coco Chanel.

In the last decades Western architecture has largely dominated the discourse and the built environment worldwide. Recently architecture firms from non-Western countries have been establishing local and global recognition for themselves. Practices all over the world face challenges against a backdrop of rapidly growing cities, ecological demands, changing societies and climate, and emerging economies. Local architects often find strikingly different solutions to local requirements, including sustainability, transportation, migration, construction materials, and traditions.
In Mexico, architects work closely with indigenous communities to create modular social housing that can be assembled in one week. In Namibia, a lodge in a wildlife conservancy is designed to echo a local bird’s nest, while in Vietnam, a library and public space have created a micro-ecosystem to house fish and grow food.
Beyond the West journeys across Asia, Africa, and the Americas to understand how local architects respond to a changing world, and focuses its wide lens on inspiring and truly global architecture.
