Skydance
Faith Hubley & Elizabeth Swados
We are the creatures of the sky
We jump
We whirl
O dancing
We are dancing
Belly floating
Sky swimming
Crackle crackle zing hello
The sky creatures reach out and invite a child to join them in a swirling, joyous, celestial celebration. A tribute to life on other planets is brought to life in Faith Hubley’s full-color illustrations and Elizabeth Swados’s evocative sounds and rhythm. Anthology is honored to publish Skydance, adapted from Faith Hubley’s now-classic animated film and reprinted for the first time since its release in 1981.
Faith Hubley (1924–2001) was a painter and filmmaker, renowned for her experimental animation and independent sensibility in children’s entertainment. After leaving a Hollywood career behind in the mid-1950s, she and her husband, John Hubley, devoted themselves to a groundbreaking practice of freely expressionistic filmmaking. In addition to more than fifty iconic films, Hubley created five books for children, several in collaboration with Elizabeth Swados.
Elizabeth Swados (1951–2016) was a playwright, director, composer, and author. A pioneer of the innovative New York theater scene of the 1970s, her pieces were performed on Broadway and the world over, and she was the recipient of Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations, Guggenheim and Ford Fellowships, and numerous other honors. She was the author of fifteen books, nine of them for children.

Humanoids
George Condo
George Condo is renowned for his eclectic mix of artistic influences—from the Old Masters to cubism to pop art. The artist who coined the term “artificial realism” blends imagery and styles from various movements in works that critique contemporary Western culture and its excesses. His paintings and sculptures feature Humanoids—figures that are metaphors of our humanity, magnifying our emotions and revealing our high and low points. For the first time in his own words, Condo reveals the genesis and significance of his distorted creations and unveils previously unseen paintings created during the pandemic and the political turmoil in the United States.
Didier Ottinger examines the career, influences, and works of this unconventional artist who is at once rewriting the history of art and caricaturing the immoderation of the modern world. An exhibition of Condo’s Humanoids at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco opens nearly a quarter century after he created set and costume designs for Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.

Where Dancefloors Stand Still DJ Sprinkles
stormfashion.dk
One of electronic music’s most intriguing and often outspoken characters, DJ Sprinkles aka Terre Thaemlitz moved to Japan from the US in 2001 and as Resident Advisor report the mix is his own sonic reaction to Japan’s worrying “Fuzoku” laws, which allows Police to enter and raid clubs for the “crime” of dancing. A recent Time Out Tokyo article highlighted how “venues routinely post ‘No dancing’ signs, with some even sending staff onto the floor to ask customers to stop moving to the music,”. Thaemlitz deeply dug tracklist boasts an esoteric assortment of rarities from a collection of underground ’90s house figures including Fingers Inc, Gene Farris, Lectroluv, Braxton Holmes and Classic Man. Russian deep house producer Alex Danilov and the now defunct MyMy collaboration between Nick Höppner and Lee Jones lend a more contemporary feel to the mix.

VOLUME IX
Ark Journal
Ark Journal Volume IX uses the question ‘What is already there?’ to examine the creativity and hard work that go into new projects and those involving renovation, restoration and extension.
We delve into the rich architectural heritage of Copenhagen and visit the listed and renovated Copenhagen apartment of an artist couple who were at pains to preserve its soul but also make it a family home. A photo essay by architect Mathias Mentze captures the rich colours, mosaic floors and frescoes of Copenhagen’s oldest museum, Thorvaldsen Museum, and a special insert showcases the work of Copenhagen-based artist Albert Grøndahl, a photographer who explores the intersection of personal narratives and cultural and historical references.
A Mexican gallery couple has transformed a series of ruins into a home filled with art that blends indoor and outdoor spaces, maintaining the existing structures and incorporating them into a harmonious blend of old and new.
The architectural and design practice of Fanny Bauer Grung and David Lopez Quincoces believes the idea that old and new can do more than simply co-exist but can illuminate the past and the present and we see this philosophy in action in their home and new studio in Milan.
At its core, good design and architecture have the power to evoke emotions and elevate our experiences within a space. Volume IX finds residences and spaces where design has a profound physical and emotional impact: the studio and home of Finnish master designer Yrjö Kukkapuro, a home in Oaxaca open to the jungle, a transparent Antwerp penthouse, a modest but soulful mid-century house in Los Angeles, and many more.

Volume VIII
Ark Journal
"In Ark Journal Volume VIII we reflect on the idea of a more fluid and holistic way of thinking and creating. We visit perfumer Barnabé Fillion of Arpa Studios in Paris whose work is inspired by his own synaesthesia, visualising fragrances as invisible landscapes. In New York, Landon Metz, an artist whose practice explores painting as a fluid meditative activity, has created an exclusive series of artworks for Ark Journal. We also share a personal memoir by renowned New York-based fine art photographer Martien Mulder. She is a minimalist whose images are sober yet warm and accessible, with photographs reflecting her travels, her movements and her life.
The homes selected for this issue, from Los Angeles to a small city in Northern Italy and from Copenhagen to Brussels, open new perspectives on the culture of specific sites and how the houses relate to their surroundings. John Pawson’s house for Michael Maharam is entirely built from stone from the mountainous site and its liveable minimalism creates a dialogue between nature, architecture and the occupants. Similarly, Kim Rahbek Hansen’s summer house on the island of Falster by Terese Erngaard of Swiss practice Diener & Diener, tells beautifully of finding the right place on the margin between land and sea. Also lapped by waves, in Helsinki, a sauna pivots between private and public life for Finnish architect Tuomas Toivonen and Japanese designer Nene Tsuboi, who are creators and custodians of this contemplative but communal space.
A multitude of creativity, languages and origins comes together in this issue. Among others we meet the multidisciplinary designer Raf Simon in conversation with curator and design director Marco Sammicheli. Also bridging fashion, art and design Ann Demeulemeester and her partner and collaborator Patrick Robyn share their four decade-long creative journey."
