Thames & Hudson
Back in 2007 the first issues of Monocle magazine hit newsstands and kiosks around the globe. At its core was a pledge to commission all original photography – capturing the world on film, on the ground and in the moment. In the years since, Monocle has continued in its pursuit of documenting through its unique lens – from embassies and personal residences to world leaders and cultural stars. Each issue has featured a dedicated image-led Expo section celebrating lesser-known locales, obscure events and curious characters through truly outstanding photography. Syrian cities, French legionnaires, Thai festival goers, brutalist architecture and private member’s clubs have all graced the pages of the magazine.
The Monocle Book of Photography draws on the best of these visual stories from an archive a decade and a half in the making. A handsomely produced linen-bound edition, the book also features original reporting about each of the assignments, as well as first-hand accounts from the photographers and editors involved.

BESIDE is one of the world’s most forward-thinking media brands on a mission to bridge the gap between humans and nature. Cofounded by creatives Jean-Daniel Petit and Eliane Cadieux, BESIDE has grown–in only a few years–from a printed magazine into a media brand encompassing an online platform, workshops, a festival as well as a cabins project at the crossroads of nature and culture.
BESIDE draw on their unique perspective to bring more than 36 of the world’s most iconic craftspeople into the spotlight. We learn how these traditions are being revived, sustained, and adapted by a new generation that wants to lead a more meaningful and sustainable life.
Divided into three sections–people, rituals, and objects–THE NEW TRADITIONAL focuses on the people reviving the traditions that bring us closer to nature and to one another. We meet Whang-od Oggay, the most authentic tattoo artist in the world, the Japanese lacquerware maker Takeo Kudo, and globe maker Peter Bellerby. The profiles also feature the designer of the PET lamp, Alvaro Catalán de Ocón, and Jim Denevan who brought the table to the farm. As Catherine Métayer, BESIDE's Editor-in-Chief, writes in her introduction, “From Kenya to Korea, from Iceland to Canada, realities and traditions are strikingly different. But practitioners share a common yearning, a common ground. They are part of a movement for a 'new traditional'.”

The North Face presents the second drop of its latest Black Series collaboration: the Kazuki collection.
Created in collaboration with Japanese designer/graphic artist Kazuki Kuraishi, part two of this highly anticipated collection is focused on his interpretation of TNF Urban Exploration’s “Seamless” theme. “In my mind, ‘Seamless’ means that you can wear it to work, and also on the weekend,” Kazuki explains, “so there aren’t really any boundaries. I perceive ‘Seamless’ as clothes you can simply wear, no matter the occasion or place or mood.”
Attuned to TNF Urban Exploration’s vision to balance utility with fashion — where high-quality outdoor-inspired silhouettes are translated for the urban setting — Kazuki has created a unique modern-street look that combines premium materials and innovative details with his distinctive Japanese-minimalist styling. Known for creating a very wearable style elevated by technical/utility elements and decorative finishes, Kazuki says “function came first before design” in this collection.
Famed as an exceptional “functional streetwear” designer, Kazuki’s career began as an intern for NIGO at the iconic Japanese brand, A Bathing Ape; and flourished under the mentorship of Hiroshi Fujiwara of fragment design. Today, he’s evolved his own signature style that combines a clean “lifestyle aesthetic” with an “easy to wear” approach — yet, always with technical acumen.

The cover of the new book, The Rolling Stones: 50, was realised through a collaborative effort between artist Ian Wright and the art direction team at Studio Fury. Ian and Stephen Kennedy (creative director at Studio Fury) first worked together on album art for Ian Brown’s ‘Golden Greats’. When the Rolling Stones management and The Mirror approached Studio Fury about producing artwork for the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary, Stephen and colleague Jimmy Tilley instantly knew that Ian’s work was a perfect fit for a cover image that needed to be both iconic but also incorporate hundreds of images. With privileged access to The Mirror’s extensive archive of Rolling Stones photographs, Studio Fury set about selecting and processing images of Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie into circular crops that could be made into button badges. Have a look at the creative process here.

In 1913, up-and-coming car manufacturer Henry Ford perfected the first large-scale assembly line. Within few years, Detroit was about to become the world capital of automobile and the cradle of modern mass-production. For the first time of history, affluence was within the reach of the mass of people. Detroit became the dazzling beacon of the American Dream. Roads, freeways and parking lots forever reshaped the landscape. At the beginning of the 50's, plants were relocated in Detroit's periphery. Highways frayed the urban fabric. Deindustrialization and segregation increased. In 1967, social tensions exploded into one of the most violent urban riots in American history. The population exodus accelerated and whole neighbourhoods began to vanish. Outdated downtown buildings emptied. Within fifty years Detroit lost more than half of its population. Detroit, industrial capital of the XXth Century, played a fundamental role shaping the modern world. The logic that created the city also destroyed it. Nowadays, unlike anywhere else, the city’s ruins are not isolated details in the urban environment. They have become a natural component of the landscape. Buy the book here
