Haider Ackermann

The autumn/winter 2015 collection from Haider Ackermann is now at Storm. The Colombian designer has through his career been the master of juxtaposition both in terms of materials as well as silhouettes. He skillfully combines a classic piece such as a hoodie with luxurious materials and intricate detailing which sets his collections apart. The A/W 2015 collection offers a variety of just that. An example would be oversized sweatshirts and hoodies with a street wear silhouette featuring lush velvet detailing, giving the overall look a luxurious and original feel and look.
A few years back, Rasmus Storm interviewed Haider Ackermann for VS Magazine, giving us an exclusive insight to the designer and his many sources of inspiration.
RS: Tell me about your background and how you became a fashion designer? HA: Okay, well are you ready for it...? How long time have you got? [laughs] No, the story is, I was born in Columbia in South America in ’71 by French parents who travelled a lot, so we ended up in Africa in different countries like Ethiopia, Chad and Algeria. Then, when I was twelve, we moved to Holland and eventually I went to Antwerp to study fashion design before finally coming here to Paris. RS: Am I right, when I say, that we can see some inspiration in your clothing from all your travelling? From Africa in particular? Last time I saw you, you wore a big scarf that looked very African… HA: Yes, that’s true. I lived there till I was twelve, so all those memories that I have, and that I like, are very vague but still very present. They keep coming back to me and influencing me. Africa is definitely a very big inspiration for me, it is such a rich country, culturally. You see all these very long and thin women with big hair and big heads... – it’s so beautiful when you are a young boy, you just can’t help getting blown away by this beauty. RS: Do you have a special woman in mind when designing your clothes? HA: No, I don’t like to define it like this because that would mean I am not open to anything else. People often ask me if I have a muse, but I always tell them no. I might be attracted to a certain kind of woman, a woman who is very discrete and doesn’t like to be in the middle of all the attention - this is the woman I would dream of seeing in a bar sitting at the corner – but I don’t want to design for her only. It would mean excluding all others.

Interview Peter Falktoft
stormfashion.dk
A lot of young guys look up to you and get inspired by your personal style, who inspires you? I don’t think it’s any secret that the one person I look to for style inspiration is Kanye West. I do think it has gotten a bit out of control though, there is a limit to how many chains a white boy can wear at the time. I am also only 1.73 cm, so I have some natural limitations to what looks good. I am 29 now, and I think I have found my own style though. Have you always been interested in fashion? Not really. I grew up mostly wearing football jerseys and Nirvana t-shirts. My parents were both really well dressed. My mother was a stewardess, so visual appearance was important but I kind of rebelled against the standard Ralph Lauren polo t-shirt. Why did you decide to design a sneaker? I have always been a sneaker fanatic. I spent a lot of time in the skater community as a kid, where sneakers were worn not only for comfort but as an important accessory as well. I am not an educated designer but the interest is genuine, it was great working with Casper. Casper and the Beast is a newly started brand, so we had a lot of fun designing together. We wanted to do only a limited stock on this sneaker as it is not about the money, but about the love for sneakers. Does this mean that there will be more designs from you in the future? I would like to design another sneaker with Casper. This was my first try as a designer where you learn as you go along - the next collaboration will probably be a bit more structured. As I said, I have not studied design so I will probably continue to design through collaborations. I would like to look into designing clothes in the future as well. What will be your next sneaker purchase? The Yeezy 350 Boost. I would also like to complete my Nike Independence Day Pack - I’m missing the white sneakers! And finally, what will be the hit of the summer? Drugs You Should Try It by Travis Scott.
The 'Urban Warfare' sneaker from Peter Falktoft x Casper and the Beast will be available online & in-store from 12pm on June 13th.

Akins
stormfashion.dk
Akins is a new Danish accessories brand founded by two brothers. Their first collection of classic men's hats, all hand made in Copenhagen, is now available. We sat down with the two brothers for an interview about Akins, personal style and London vs. Copenhagen. You have a very unique personal style, where does the inspiration for your own personal style comes from? We have not always been into fashion, we started getting really into it a few years ago, when we were living in London. The surroundings in London allowed us to explore and experiment with our own personal style, so that is where we found our own style. Why did you decide to start designing hats? We have been wearing hats for a long time, and found that it added a personal touch to our style. We have always travelled a lot and found a lot of our hats abroad in cool shops and various vintage markets. When we came back to Copenhagen we sensed that there was a big interest in hats and that motivated us to create our own. How would you compare the street style in London vs. Copenhagen? Living in London is very different to Copenhagen. The different areas of the London are so different to each other compared to Copenhagen. Londoners are generally more daring with their style compared to Copenhagen, people are not afraid to mix fun elements into their personal style. There are also great sources of inspiration in Copenhagen, but the street style here is much more classic and minimalistic. Where do you see Akins in 10 years? The dream for Akins in 10 years time would be for it to be a well established brand that creates anything from accessories to trousers to jackets - both for men and women. We have a lot of exciting ideas and designs which we are looking forward to bringing to life. We are already working on a new collection which will be ready for fall. What do you think are wardrobe essentials for men? We think every man should own a fitted suit. The suit is the basic element that you can combine with different other elements, from there you can create various outfits. The goal for us is to find the ideal balance between classic and modern. A wardrobe essential is of course also an Akins hat! What is the best advice you have ever received? The best advice we have ever received is that fit is everything. When we are buying a suit, a pair of trousers or a jacket, we always make sure it has the perfect fit because every person is different. Fit and quality goes hand in hand which is why a visit to the tailor is a necessity.
