    TANK Epoch Issue

Welcome to the TANK EPOCH. This autumn we celebrate TANK's 20th birthday with a bumper issue celebrating their tradition of radical innovation, and with a meditation on our era of tectonic shifts. As always the magazine encompasses critical analysis and incisive thought, this time turning our lens to subjects as varied as the physics of time, the nature of the image, the transformation of the consumer and the new, new reality of global geopolitics.

“Who believes in these milestones, and how?” asks Benjamin H. Bratton in his autobiographical riff on the end of history. For this special anniversary edition, TANK called upon the avant-garde semioticians Axis Mundi to dissect TANK’s 20-year archive as a way of reflecting on our present. Elsewhere the great theorist, writer and artist Victor Burgin discusses his notion of photography’s apparatus.

The icon of New York’s downtown Lynne Tillman provides exclusive fiction and Hellen van Meene reinterprets Caravaggio’s The Seven Works of Mercy through this season’s Gucci. Suzy Hansen reflects on her book Notes on a Foreign Country, a finalist for this year’s Pulitzer Prize, in her hometown of Istanbul, and TANK’s own Caroline Issa reflects on the future of fashion and the perishability of influence today. Plus, TANK talks with Duane Michals, Nicole Aragi, Dunya Mikhail and Vahni Capildeo.

Birthdays are a time to reflect, or so we’re told. Here’s to another 20!
